Tough guys, we have plenty. Tough girls are a different matter. Second, not all the female martial artists we deal with are into fighting; some practice the arts for other, less physical reasons. These two female martial artists, however, bring some special accolades and history to the table. At first glance, most people — most martial artists, even — will zero in on the smaller person in any fight and deem him or her to be at a distinct disadvantage. Throughout my life my friends and family have known me for many different talents and interests. Today I am best known by the moniker Judo Girl, a designation that makes me happy and proud. Judo is a Japanese sport that consists of throws, pens, and submissions. It is sometimes confused with karate or tae kwon do because of the similar uniforms we wear.
Next to soccer, judo is the second most widely played sport in the world. Every day judo touches the lives of millions of people, and it has transformed my life for the better. Judo is one of the few sports that is played in both the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The only specific difference between Paralympic and Olympic judo is the position of the players at the start of a match. In Olympic judo with sighted players, the players begin their match standing ten feet apart on the mat, and they need to fight for their grips.
In Paralympic judo, players who are blind or visually impaired begin their matches at the center of the mat. Opponents can start the match having physical contact with one another. If at any time during the match the players lose total physical contact, they will be brought back to the center of the mat so they can regain their contact, and the match will begin again.
I experienced judo for the first time on January 9, , when I was twelve years old. More than five years later I still remember the precise date because the experience had such an impact on my life.
Archery is the number one sport in this tiny country, where the mere mention of judo , a sport which did not even exist in Bhutan 10 years ago, tends to elicit a mixture of curiosity and mystified glances. The fearless Wangmo is intent on changing all that, however. Only 15 or 16 of those members are girls. I thought it would be good for self-defence because girls face many risks.
Wangmo has proved so adept at the sport that she won a bronze medal at the Hong Kong Cadets Asian Cup And though she lost her two bouts at Buenos Aires , falling in one of them to eventual silver medallist Tababi Devi Thangjam of India, it is hoped that her mere participation in the competition will help raise awareness of the sport in Bhutan.

When the Tokyo Olympics eventually open a year late, one of the hottest tickets in town will be for judo. Invented in Japan and first introduced at Tokyo , judo is coming home. Judo, Japan and the Olympics have an inextricable bond.
The sport was created in the late 19th century by the revered Jigoro Kano, who would become Japan’s — and Asia’s — first International Olympic Committee member. Kano, whose portrait gazes down benevolently at every dojo, was the driving force behind Japan first taking part in the Olympics in , travelling to Stockholm as team captain and meeting Olympics founding father Baron Pierre de Courbertin. He was also instrumental in Tokyo being awarded the Games in — an Olympics that never took place due to Japanese aggression in China and the outbreak of World War II.
De Courbertin believed Kano’s judo philosophy and the Olympic ideal were perfect bedfellows. Kano named the martial art “judo” meaning “the gentle way” and saw it as a means of developing both the body and the mind. Kano was way ahead of his time in terms of inclusivity. He encouraged women to take up the sport and at first did not charge for classes, believing everyone regardless of rank, wealth or social class should have the opportunity to enjoy judo. Judo’s founder is also closely linked with the development of sport in Japan.
