While a total of 43 percent of online daters in America reported feeling they do not receive enough enough messages on dating apps, broken down by gender, that percentage shot up to 57 percent of men, compared to just 24 percent of women who felt similarly disappointed. And while a mere 8 percent of men reported receiving too many messages, 30 percent of women felt overwhelmed by the volume of suitors flooding their inbox. Perhaps some of that fatigue comes from the fact that women on dating apps were also much more likely than men to report experiencing harassment on the app, including 46 percent of women who reported receiving unsolicited sexual messages or images from a match.

Our design allows us to directly observe individual decisions rather than just final matches. We find that for women, network measures of popularity and activity of the men they contact are significantly positively associated with their messaging behaviors, while for men only the network measures of popularity of the women they contact are significantly positively associated with their messaging behaviors. Thirdly, compared with men, women attach great importance to the socio-economic status of potential partners and their own socio-economic status will affect their enthusiasm for interaction with potential mates.
Further, we use the ensemble learning classification methods to rank the importance of factors predicting messaging behaviors, and find that the centrality indices of users are the most important factors. Finally, by correlation analysis we find that men and women show different strategic behaviors when sending messages. Compared with men, for women sending messages, there is a stronger positive correlation between the centrality indices of women and men, and more women tend to send messages to people more popular than themselves.
These results have implications for understanding gender-specific preference in online dating further and designing better recommendation engines for potential dates. The research also suggests new avenues for data-driven research on stable matching and strategic behavior combined with game theory. The potentials-attract means that people choose mates matched with their sex-specific traits indicating reproductive potentials: men pay more attention than women to youthfulness, health, and physical attractiveness of partners which are the characteristics of fertile mates, while women pay more attention than men to ambition, social status, financial wealth, and commitment of partners which are the characteristics of good providers.

Based upon social structural accounts of mate preferences and career interest, it is often suggested that women avoid high status, how masculine careers typical as those in science, technology, engineering, or math STEM in favor of pursuing more traditionally romantic communal apps, or, alternatively, that women in STEM may have difficulty establishing and changing typical-society romantic relationships, as their career apps are incongruent with gender role roles.
A traditional possibility is that women in STEM fields may establish less traditionally stereotypical relationships with respect to values placed on careers and family and with online to traits typically associated with one gender more than another. This study assessed the career and family values, as how as personality and cognitive traits, in typical romantic couples attending college, half including a woman in a STEM major and half including a woman in a female-dominated major FDM.
STEM couples revealed only limited gender differences all of which were counter to gender role stereotypes.
